Breve intervista a Ferruccio Andreoni, autore di "Le ciliegie sul tetto", "Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze", "Torna di gran moda l'abito nero"

What was the first book you read?



" The Rats " by James Herbert. I was, I think, eight years old and I saw a review in a magazine, I think it was "Panorama." I convinced my mother to buy it, and when the bookseller heard that it was for me he even got a little bit upset: "Madam, this is not a book suitable for a child!"



And was she right?



I think so. But I was a strange child: at six years old my hero was Kriminal. Not exactly a paragon of virtue and meekness....



What is your favorite book?



Ask the Dust by John Fante on even days and Pinocchio on odd days.





How would you define your style?

Essentially I do fiction although for convenience I get pigeonholed into horror but I find that limiting. In my novels horror is a small part, I use it as an ingredient but without overdoing it.





Who are your literary models? Who has inspired you?



My great good fortune is that although I have read a lot I have the ability then to forget almost everything. So if I have had any literary influences they are unconscious and completely unconscious. Music, when I write, is my real influence. I would love to have the libertarian attitude of Frank Zappa and Prince, they were basically outside the box and struggling to be artistically free. When I write I try to be as musical and as free as possible. I want the words to sound, to unfold harmonically but with little dissonances that give character to the whole, amplifying by paradox the melody.





In Italy among writers is there anyone you like?



Of course. Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Moravia, Pasolini, Aldo Busi.





What does a typical day of yours look like?



I get up at four o'clock. I go to work. I come back around seven and write for about two hours. I go back to work. Around one o'clock I stop and reread and fix what I wrote in the morning. In the afternoon I play the guitar, play a few rounds and then get back to writing. At 10 p.m. I go to sleep. A shitty life.(Laughs)





Tell us about your books.



In KKK and The Cherries there is a dreamlike component that stems from my passion for surrealist painting but Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze definitely veers more toward the nightmarish, it is much bleaker although everyone who has read it finds it more entertaining than The Cherries on the Roof. Many believe that Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze is a sequel to "The Cherries" because some of the main characters from the first book also return in the second, but that is not the case.

The challenge was to do something completely different by inviting some of the old characters to the party. Then a strange thing happened, because a character from the first novel kind of crashed in, invited himself overbearingly.... I wanted the two books to be able to be read independently, to be independent of each other but at the same time to complement each other. If you read "Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze" without having read "The Cherries on the Roof" you will receive it in one way whereas if you read them together probably the feelings you will get from it will be different, maybe even change the meaning a little bit.

That was what I had in mind from the beginning, to create subtracks that resemble an endless game of mirrors but without forcing anyone to play. You can swim on the surface or you can decide to dive in and plumb the seabed.

Either way it will be an unusual, engaging and fun adventure. Back in vogue it could be the script of an old giallo film with Gothic veins by one of the masters of the genre, with the fog, the decadence, the harpsichord in the soundtrack..I had a lot of fun writing it and I'm proud of the ending that is both cruel and poetic. You Expect Ghosts is the most experimental of them all:pure delirium and in fact it is the one that has been least understood but I do not despair: even kkk when it came out struggled a bit, for a few months it didn't beat around the bush, it began to sell a year after its release and now among my books it is the best selling.





At one point in Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze comes unexpected horror.....in an ironic context that increases,almost paradoxically, the perception of it...



Yes, because of its unhinging component and its subversive force; it's like the wind that suddenly comes into the room and brings disorder by making all the papers fly off your desk.

I think I understand which scene you're referring to: they're all standing around naked in a room and someone comes along who is more naked than they are , with no superstructure, no skin, bringing only dismay and chaos...





What would you like to be said about you?



That I am original and that I can write.





And what would you never want to be said about you?



That I am predictable, that my books resemble something else.

Quale è stato il primo libro che hai letto?

" I topi " di James Herbert. Avevo, credo, otto anni e vidi una recensione su una rivista, mi pare  fosse "Panorama". Convinsi mia madre a comperarlo e quando il libraio seppe che era per me si alterò pure un pò: "Signora, questo non è un libro adatto ad un bambino!"

E aveva ragione?

Credo di sì. Ma io ero un bimbo strano:  a sei anni il mio eroe era Kriminal. Non proprio un esempio di virtù e di mitezza....

Qual'è il tuo libro preferito?

Chiedi alla polvere di John Fante nei giorni pari e Pinocchio nei giorni dispari.

Come definiresti il tuo stile?

Essenzialmente faccio narrativa anche se per comodità vengo incasellato nell'horror ma lo trovo limitante. Nei miei romanzi  l'horror è una piccola parte, lo uso come un ingrediente ma senza esagerare.

Chi sono i tuoi modelli letterari? Chi ti ha ispirato?

La mia grande fortuna è che pur avendo letto molto ho la capacità poi di dimenticare quasi tutto. Quindi se ho avuto delle influenze letterarie sono inconsce e completamente inconsapevoli. La musica, quando scrivo, è la mia vera influenza.  Mi piacerbbe avere l'attitudine libertaria di Frank Zappa e Prince, loro erano fondamentalmente fuori dagli schemi e lottavano per essere artisticamente liberi. Quando scrivo cerco di essere il più musicale e il più libero possibile. Voglio che le parole suonino, che si dipanino armoniche ma con delle piccole dissonanze che diano carattere al tutto, amplificando per paradosso la melodia.

 In Italia  fra gli scrittori c'è qualcuno che ti piace?

Certo. Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Moravia, Pasolini, Aldo Busi.

 Come è una tua giornata tipo?

Mi alzo alle quattro. Vado a lavorare. Torno verso le sette e scrivo per circa due ore. Riprendo a lavorare. Verso l'una smetto e rileggo e aggiusto quello che ho scritto la mattina. Il pomeriggio suono la chitarra, faccio qualche  giro e poi mi rimetto a scrivere. Alle 22 dormo. Una vita di merda.(Ride)

Parlaci dei tuoi  libri.

In KKK e Le ciliegie c'è una componente onirica che deriva dalla mia passione per la pittura surrealista ma Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze vira decisamente di più verso l'incubo, è molto più tetro anche se tutti quelli che lo hanno letto lo trovano più divertente rispetto a "Le ciliegie sul tetto". Molti credono che Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze sia il seguito de "Le ciliegie" perchè alcuni dei protagonisti del primo libro ritornano anche nel secondo, ma non è così.

La sfida era fare una cosa completamente diversa  invitando alla festa alcuni  dei vecchi personaggi. Poi è successa una cosa strana, perchè un personaggio del primo romanzo si è come imbucato, si è auto invitato di prepotenza... Volevo che i due libri potessero essere letti autonomamente, che fossero indipendenti l'uno dall'altro ma che allo stesso tempo fossero complementari. Se leggi "Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze" senza aver letto "Le ciliegie sul tetto" lo recepirai in un modo mentre se li leggerai insieme probabilmente le sensazioni che ne ricaverai saranno diverse, forse muterà persino un pò il senso.

Questo era quello che avevo in mente fin da subito, creare delle sottotracce che assomigliassero ad un gioco infinito di specchi ma senza forzare nessuno a giocare. Puoi nuotare sulla superficie oppure decidere di immergerti e di scandagliare il fondale.

In entrambi i casi sarà una avventura insolita, coinvolgente e divertente. Torna di gran moda potrebbe essere la sceneggiatura di un vecchio film  giallo con venature gotiche di uno dei maestri del genere, con la nebbia, la decadenza, il clavicembalo nella colonna sonora..mi sono divertito molto a scriverlo e sono orgoglioso del finale che è crudele e poetico insieme. Ti aspetti spettri è il più sperimentale di tutti:delirio puro e infatti è quello che è stato meno compreso ma non dispero: pure kkk  quando è uscito ha faticato un pò, per qualche mese non ha battuto chiodo, ha cominciato a vendere ad un anno dalla uscita e ora fra i miei é il libro che ha venduto di più.

Ad un certo punto in Kamasutra Kolossal Kamikaze arriva inaspettato l'orrore.....in un contesto ironico che ne aumenta,quasi paradossalmente, la percezione...

Sì, per  la sua componente scardinante e la sua forza eversiva; è come il vento che improvvisamente entra nella stanza e porta il disordine facendoti volare tutti i fogli dalla scrivania.

Credo di aver capito a quale scena ti riferisci: se ne stanno tutti nudi in una stanza e arriva uno più nudo di loro , senza sovrastrutture, senza pelle, a portare solo sgomento e caos...

Cosa vorresti che si dicesse di te?

Che sono originale e che so scrivere.

E cosa non vorresti mai che si dicesse di te?

Che sono prevedibile, che i miei libri somigliano a qualcosa d'altro.
